In her ground floor council flat Hilda fights a losing battle against disintegration and decay. First the bedroom goes, then the kitchen, and soon Hilda finds the park is altogether more congenial. Her neighbour, May, who thrives on martyrdom, struggles to stop the rot. But Hilda decides to simply let things be. Nature, and then the bailiffs, reclaim her flat, and she comes to live in a world where imagination and reality are fused – to the despair of the TV documentary crew who want to ‘do’ bag ladies.
