Spring 1922 – Henry Collette likes to spend time trying to learn and understand about times past, now that he has retired, while his wife Estelle has her garden to look after.
Winter 1858 – Nine-year-old Annie wakes up to another day in a grim Victorian Union Workhouse. Her mother, who had daytime employment as a housemaid on a large nearby estate, is not with her, after heading to Ireland to work in an orphanage. Annie doesn’t know her father, as her mother would never say who he was.
By chance, Henry finds himself drawn to this young girl’s situation. But can he help her?
