Jason Pettus, former owner of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, now a popular rabble-rouser over at lit-nerd social network Goodreads.com, was once a snotty Generation X twentysomething “edgy artist” in the 1990s; and back then, LGBTQ pioneer Dennis Cooper was one of the “New Transgressive” authors they discussed in hushed, awed tones over poetry slams and tattoo sessions. Only one problem, Pettus recently realized in his early fifties; he had never actually gotten around to reading any of Cooper’s sex-and-violence-filled books. So he ran down to the library and checked out all five volumes of Cooper’s most famous series, the semi-autobiographical “George Miles Cycle” (containing two of his biggest commercial hits, 1994’s “Try” and 1997’s “Guide”). Soon he found himself mired in a world of ‘90s slacker excess, as the naughty fun of Pulp Fiction and Bret Easton Ellis collided against the never-satiated appetite of suburban malls and Corporate America. Watch as Cooper, as well as all the other Gen-X New Transgressive authors, go from underground whispers to hipster validation and eventually MTV stardom, to have it all crash and burn at the turn of the Millennium, and unexpectedly then have September 11th hammer in the final nail on its coffin. Is the Miles Cycle the next Genet or Bataille, or is it exploitative crap that should be rightly forgotten? Enough time has passed that we can start coming up with much more historically informed answers; and what Pettus finds in his lively, funny, and very opinionated look at these books, through the filter of the Woke 2020s, may surprise you.
