When Joe Corrigan awakens in a Pittsburgh hospital without any memory, he embarks on a quest to recover his lost past. What he discovers is that his life no longer exists. To test the effectiveness of his virtual world, he volunteered himself as one of its first human inhabitants. But the Oz Project failed and Joe has lost his wife, friends, and colleagues. Left alone to pick up the pieces of his shattered life, Joe finds himself in an unfamiliar world - a world where nothing is quite as it should be. The one authentic person he meets is Lilly, whom he recognizes as a fellow Oz volunteer. Lilly is different from the others - somehow she is more alive.
