Stephen Crown is a bestselling author, but a force he calls the Ghostwriter writes for him. When this force draws him back to Hugo, Oregon to compose another novel, Stephen finds his hometown in the clutches of a rich priest the locals call Mr. Faust.
Faust has infiltrated the Hugo church and persuaded his followers to harass Stephen with chicken sacrifices, threatening messages, even death. As the antics escalate, Stephen learns more and more about the force that writes through his left hand, though he's no longer certain if it's friendly.
